Ravenna, Italy - Day 51

We docked early this morning in the very non-picturesque port of Ravenna. This seems to be a major sea port for this area and we were amongst cargo and oil tankers quite a distance from town. Ravenna sits on the coast of the Adriatic Sea in the northeastern region of Italy.

However, once the port’s shuttle bus dropped us off in the main square, the pedestrian-only streets were a welcome sight. We had joined a small group of six with a guide to see the famous glass-tile mosaics found in the various churches. The glass-tile mosaics were quite stunning including those we saw in the Basilica of Saint Vitale and in the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia.

We sat in the town’s main square and had cappuccinos and croissants before heading back to the ship. Shopping was out as it was siesta time and on Thursdays, all the shops close for the day at 1:00pm. You can really do this city in a half of a day and if you ever come back, it would make a nice point to head off to see Bologna or San Marino.

Next up, Trieste, Italy.
