Capri, Italy - Day 46

We awoke to rain. It let up a bit and we headed upstairs to have some breakfast in the hotel’s breakfast room. It began to pour and we thought our day would be spent inside. Some sunlight peaked through, so we decided to try to get to the other side of the island to see Anacapri. We were able to walk the long distance from our hotel to the taxi area without getting wet and headed out of town. To get to the other side, you have to go up a narrow, very winding road that at one point feels like a ride at Magic Mountain as it dangles you over a cliff a mile above the sea.

It was sprinkling but we were able to see the museum at Casa Rossa which was built by an American civil war Colonel in 1899. He collected and conserved numerous archaeological artifacts which he managed to recover off the island including three statues from a nymphaeum in the Blue Grotto.

Next we visited the Church of San Michele with its beautiful majolica pavement depicting Adam and Eve in Paradise completed in 1761. I can’t believe you can get so close to these types of artwork. It was amazing.

We were about to leave town when we noticed a sign indicating that the Villa San Michele was just down the lane. We are so glad we wandered down. In 1885, a Swedish physician built this villa on the ruins of an ancient Chapel dedicated to San Michele. His book “The Story of San Michele” is world famous and he lived on Capri for more than 56 years accumulating art found on the island. The views inside and out to the sea are magnificent.

We returned back to Capri and had to dart in between all the shop awnings to remain dry. We stayed indoors eating salami, cheese, crackers and wine the remainder of the day as the weather turned worse.
