After navigating up the Rio del Plata (the widest estuary in the world), we docked near downtown Montevideo this morning at 8:00 a.m. We were off the ship and on our tour bus by 8:30. We had arranged an all day tour of the highlights of Montevideo through the people we met online at Cruise Critic. There were two mini-buses with around thirty people. Everyone showed up on time, so we were off and running in no time.
Montevideo is not an overly large city but is quite spread out. We hit all the main sights including the Legislative Palace, Fortaleza del Cerro (the last Spanish-built fortress in Uruguay), Prado Park with its historical monuments, Plaza Independencia with its monument to Uruguayan hero Jose Artigas and a visit to a winery.
The city is quite nice with an beautiful beachfront area that looked like a small version of Miami Beach. It was Carnival so much of the shops and commerce in the city were shut down which helped alot in getting us quickly around the city. We really enjoyed our tour of the winery, especially the antipasto and wine tasting that followed. We bought several bottles to enjoy on the ship.
We would definitely come back here on a ship again - maybe to visit one of the estancias located outside of the city.
Good night!
