After two sea days, we arrived in Stanley, Falkland Islands. Stanley is 52 degrees south, 57 degrees west and is located west off the tip of South America in the Atlantic Ocean.
The islands are pretty stark looking. There are lots of rocks and very little vegetation. Stanley has about 3,000 citizens and is basically a few streets of pre-fab houses. Our day was spent touring the battlefields and monuments to the 1980’s Falkland War between the United Kingdom and Argentina. Our guide was excellent and described how the different forces battled each other during the short war.
We had seen some of the strife this war caused when we were in Buenos Aires. There were several protests going on there because the Argentine government is refusing to provide long term benefits to the soldiers who fought in the “conflict”.
The weather is quite bizarre down here. It started out very sunny, then began to rain, then sun, then really cold and overcast, then sunny again. Luckily, the seas were calm as this was a tender only port. It was quite a long process getting everyone off this large ship and then back on. But we made it and really enjoyed our time on the island.
Good night!
