We took a two hour train to the town of Nikko to visit the shrines and temples. The most famous is Toshogu where Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder of the Tokugawa shogunate which ruled Japan for over 250 years until 1868, is enshrined. I had been here in the early 1970's and it made an immense impression on me then. I'm glad to say that it still is an incredible and awe-inspiring place.
